Maria (Larraín, 2024) - LFF

She wanted to sing till her last breath, and she did. Angelina Jolie is back in full force in her newest, Oscar worthy, role as prima donna Greek-born opera singer Maria Callas in Pablo Larraín’s latest biopic Maria – the third in his trilogy of 20th century female icons. Leading up to her last days alive, Callas is living in her Paris apartment, with her two dogs, her butler Ferruccio (Pierfrancesco Favino) and housemaid Bruna (Alba Rohrwacher) as she is strung out on pills. The film opens up with the scene of Ferruccio and Bruna walking in on her dead body on February 16, 1977, then it returns to one week prior to Callas’ death. Throughout her last week we see her have a seat with Mandrax (Kodi Smitt-McPhee), the journalist named after her favourite drug. The Brutalist (Corbet, 2024)

The time has finally come, and it is nothing like I have ever seen before. Ever since it premiered at the Venice Film Festival in September 2024 – where it received a twelve-minute standing ovation and won director Brady Corbet the Silver Lion for best director – most of us have been waiting to catch Brady Corbet’s drama, The Brutalist (2024). Following its acclaim from Venice, it then proceeded to the Toronto International Film Festival to screen for buyers and a very limited public audience. This 215-minute film (with a 15-minute intermission woven in) has received numerous awards already without even being available to the general public. The Golden Globe Awards for Best Motion Picture winner and Best Performance by an Actor in a Motion Picture, Drama. London Film Festival 2024

In cinemas throughout London, and on tour around the UK, the 68th annual BFI London Film Festival took place from the 9th of October until the 20th. Over 150 films and limited series sneak peaks were shown. It is difficult to see even all the films that interest you at the London Film Festival, but the following thirty were the ones I was lucky enough to view this year. This year I not only attended the film festival as a member of the public, but as accredited press as well. Through the knowledgeable podcasting duo at The Cinematologists , I viewed many films at Picturehouse Central during the press and industry screenings and recorded bonus episodes with Dr. Dario Llinares and Ben Goff for The Cinematologists Patreon .
