“I’m not back in the game, everyone else is just incompetent”
And Stephanie Smothers (Anna Kendrick) is entirely back, or is she? Well Emily Nelson (Blake Lively) is back, back from prison. Escaped? Released on probation? That is what Stephanie wants to know with this newest “simple favour” she is being asked. It’s been seven years since Paul Feig introduced audiences to Emily and Stephanie and three since Another Simple Favor was announced as the sequel story for the duo.
As A Simple Favor (2018) ends, Emily is hauled off to prison and Stephanie and company are safe and happy. Now, however, Stephanie’s life is once again turned upside down when Emily crashes her book launch inviting her to her wedding. As it turns out, Emily’s fiancé, Dante Versano (Michele Morrone), a rich Italian businessman got her out of jail and the two have planned an extravagant wedding on the island of Capri. Keeping Stephanie on her toes, Emily alludes to a possible want for revenge, but more twists and turns occur than she could have ever expected.
With the return of Kendrick and Lively, Henry Golding also comes back as Emily’s ex-husband and baby-daddy, Sean. As each went head-to-head in A Simple Favor, they are back at each other’s throats in their new adventure. Filled with anger and grudges, who can possibly tell who it is that is truly behind the dark events that are to follow. Of course, within a day of their arrival to Capri, someone is murdered, and Stephanie is on the case to find out who did it and why, but she is more out of her element than ever before.
Nothing compared to the original, Another Simple Favor of course did not involve a simple favour in any sense. However, the comedy, outfits and banter between characters was still prominent. In terms of lacklustre entertainment, there is still something compelling about watching Lively in her outrageous and stunning outfits, while Kendrick provides that awkward mom character in full. That being said, the twists that the original provided were lost in its sequel. Foreshadowing moments and tells happen throughout the film to hint to who may possibly be behind the murders that take place.
If you’re up for putting yourself through two hours of silliness, Another Simple Favor is now streaming on Amazon Prime Video. Though it is not an ideal sequel for what was a fun comedic murder mystery, it still returns audiences to the world of Emily and Stephanie. Or perhaps, you are simply interested in the lustrous outfits and awkward mom speech that will be provided.
